Through dialogue with suppliers of instrumentation for measuring magnetic properties, we have found that Quantum Design GmbH is the only provider capable of delivering the necessary instrumentation, software, technical support, and documentation that meets our minimum requirements for the desired equipment. Among other things, the following components are unique to their product:
Magnetic properties:
The intended measurement system for characterizing magnetic properties requires a number of specific technical features, including a minimum field of +/-3 T, a temperature range of 50 K–400 K, as well as the option for high temperatures up to 1000 K for measuring Curie temperature.
High vacuum:
The system must have an integrated high-vacuum (HV) setup, which can be used for both heat capacity measurements and the VSM oven. At the same time, high vacuum is also essential for enabling us to prepare samples in the state, where they exhibit the desired properties.
Heat capacity:
The system supports heat capacity measurements. Temperature control is fully automated, enabling stable and reproducible measurements as well as automated operation, including measurements at night and during weekends.
Software:
The system uses MultiVu, which includes advanced scripting functions for automating measurement protocols and data collection. In addition, the system supports the FORC (First Order Reversal Curves) measurement method, which is essential for detailed analysis of magnetic materials.
Custom setup for different angles:
We have developed a unique system for the QD-V525, which allows measurements of samples at various angles relative to the applied magnetic field. These specialized sample holders were developed for the V525 and are fully integrated into the system’s mechanical and software control.
These holders enable precise and reproducible angle-dependent measurements, which are crucial for characterizing anisotropic magnetic materials.
Upgrade options:
Furthermore, the system supports future upgrades to the ACMS-2 (AC Measurement System), making it possible to perform both AC and DC magnetic measurements in a single measurement sequence. The system can also be upgraded with the V400 resistivity module, enabling precise measurements of electrical resistivity under the same temperature and magnetic-field conditions.
This allows integrated characterization of both magnetic and electrical properties in a single system.
Robust measurement system:
Hundreds of systems from the PPMS family (PPMS, DynaCool, and VersaLab) are installed at research institutions worldwide; I am aware of four systems in Denmark. This ensures a high degree of compatibility, data consistency, and methodological comparability with other leading research environments.
Based on the above, it is assessed that for technical reasons, there is only one supplier capable of delivering a system that meets the necessary functional, integration, and future upgrade requirements. The procurement can therefore be carried out without prior tendering in accordance with §80 of the Danish Public Procurement Act, as competition is technically limited to a single supplier.
