Die Endstelle Hauptbahnhof ist Bestandteil des Stadtbahnprogramms Halle, Stufe 2. Durch den Bau des Aufstellgleises bzw. Haltestellegleises am Hauptbahnhof sollen betriebliche Zwangspunkte, Abhängigkeiten und Behinderungen bei Fahrplanabweichungen beseitigt werden.
